Top Kiwi musicians, poets and artists are donating their talents and joining forces in a one-off special tribute to Hone Tuwhare – one of the country’s most distinguished and successful poets. Koha for the Crib will celebrate the Auckland launch of the Hone Tuwhare Charitable Trust. The Trust, which was established last year, is working to purchase and restore Hone’s former “crib” at Kaka Point for use as a writer’s residence. Profits from the evening will help fund the project, which has been steadily gaining momentum and support since the Trust was established. The Trust’s Patron is former Governor General Sir Paul Reeves. Already the project has generated strong media attention, with articles in the Otago Daily Times.

Koha for the Crib will feature special semi-acoustic performances from:

Martin Phillips of the Chills, Dave Kilgour, Herbs Unplugged, Whirimako Black and Russell Walder, Her Make Believe Band, Graham Brazier, Aerialist Eve Gordon, Lawrence Arabia.

Raconteur Poets, Sam Hunt, Glenn Calquhoun, Tracy Tawhiao and broadcaster John Campbell and some surprise guests will entertain with their own and Hone’s work.

Well-known New Zealand artists including Leon Kipa, Shane Hansen, Lonnie Hutchinson, Ngahina Hohaia, Frans Baetens, Tracey Tawhiao, Suzanne Tamaki, Charlotte Graham, and Andrea Hopkins have donated works to be auctioned, as has David Kilgour.

The night will be MC’d by broadcaster Carol Hirschfeld – who is also a Trustee of the Hone Tuwhare Trust.

Says Rob Tuwhare, Hone’s son, “we’re blown away by the support from all the musicians poets and artists – they all know Dad’s work and want to see his legacy inspire another generation. The Crib project is a great way to do it.”

Tickets for the evening will be available at Ticketek, and are expected to go like hot cakes on a cold Kaka Point day. The evening is being managed by well-known and highly experienced event producer Kim Hegan, of Hegan Entertainment. Kim is also a Trustee.
